How does a cochlear implant work?

A lot of people ask me how a cochlear implant works and I just watched this video which explains it very clearly and simply.  Scroll down the page to where it says "How does it work" and click on the play arrow to start the animation.  (It only goes for 51 sec, so don't worry, it doesn't take long to watch!)

  1. Hi Sarah, thanks for this I have been wondering how it all works. Why can't Henry have his CIs in all the time? Sorry for being completely ignorant! Hope you are doing well and that Henry is learning fast :) Love, Jess.

  2. Hi Jess,
The external speech processors are splash proof, but not water proof, so he can't wear it if there's a chance they (or Henry) could fall in the water (like swimming or bath time). Although I have an idea how to do bath time without getting them wet, just haven't been game to try it yet. And he doesn't sleep with them on because they are not comfortable, plus probably wouldn't stay in place. And flights, it's like a laptop or other electronic gear, needs to be off during take off and landing etc. But with technology improving everyday, I have no doubt these issues will all be solved soon.
    Thanks for being interested!
